10 Rules for Catching a Taxi in Bali

Catching a taxi in Bali can be hit-or-miss, with most drivers being honest but a few engaging in scams. Since the COVID pandemic, taxis have returned to Bali’s streets, often causing traffic issues by curb-crawling to attract tourists.

In Bali, you have four transport options: taxi, private driver, scooter or motorbike, or ride-sharing app.

  1. Catching a Taxi in Bali
Most taxi drivers are honest, but some are not. Taxis are everywhere, and curb-crawling is common. Knowing your destination and ensuring the driver uses the meter will simplify the experience. Metered taxis in Bali are cheap compared to Western countries.
  2. Which Taxis to Get
Bluebird Taxis are the most reliable in Bali. Look for Bluebird branding to avoid unaffiliated blue taxis that might try to rip you off.
  3. Arguing Over the Price
Always ask for the meter to be engaged or negotiate the price first. Insist on the meter for short trips and tip drivers who comply. For longer trips or during peak hours, a negotiated rate may be necessary.
  4. Getting a Taxi from the Airport
Airport taxis are regulated and expensive. Using a private car and driver is often a better option.
  5. Having a Taxi Called to Your Accommodation
Taxis called by your accommodation are usually reliable and will use the meter. If your hotel only arranges private cars, you may be staying somewhere taxis won’t serve.
  6. Long Distance Taxi Rides
For distances over 5 km, a private car and driver might be cheaper than a taxi. For longer trips, negotiate a rate in advance.
  7. Taxis During Peak Hours
Peak hours (3:30 pm – 7 pm) see increased traffic and fares. State your destination and negotiate the price if necessary.
  8. Taxis from Tourist Attractions
At tourist spots, local drivers often have a monopoly, and ride-sharing apps may be banned. Negotiating with local drivers is usually required.
  9. Getting a Taxi Late at Night
Late-night taxi rides are more expensive. Agree on a price before getting in and have the correct amount ready to avoid arguments.
  10. Ride-Sharing Apps
Using Grab is often better than taxis. Always tip your driver as fares are low. Be aware of areas where ride-sharing is banned due to local taxi operators.
