Complete Guide to the Best Waterfalls in Bali

The waterfalls in Bali are popular tourist attractions. While many are accessible via well-trodden pathways and steps, others require more planning and are harder to access through jungle walkways and descending slippery steps. This guide includes maps, entrance fees, safety tips, itinerary links, and advice on when to pay for local guides or travel independently.

The first thing to know is the term Air Terjun, which means waterfall in Balinese. Some waterfalls are close to the tourist areas of Seminyak and Kuta, like Tegenungan. The more spectacular ones, like Aling-Aling and Gitgit, are in Northern Bali near Singaraja, a longer journey from Southern Bali.

South Bali

Some of the best waterfalls are near southern tourist destinations like Canggu, Seminyak, Legian, Kuta, Sanur, Nusa Dua, and Uluwatu. A popular tour is the Best Waterfalls Near Seminyak.

Tegenungan Waterfall

Tegenungan is the largest waterfall by volume and the closest to southern tourist enclaves. To get there, drive from Denpasar to Tegenungan Kemenuh village, Gianyar (16 km, about 30 minutes). Goa Rang Reng Waterfall

Suwat Waterfall

Suwat Waterfall is a newer attraction developed by the local village. Located 15 km from Ubud, it’s not far from Goa Gajah and Tibumana Waterfall. It’s deep enough to swim and less crowded than Tegenungan. The walk from the roadside is about 5 minutes.

North Bali

The waterfalls in North Bali are generally taller and more spectacular. It takes around 2.5 hours to drive from Seminyak to Gitgit Waterfall.

Aling-Aling Waterfall

For adventure seekers, Aling-Aling in Northern Bali is ideal. The waterfall is unique due to its rocky outcropping that splits the river into two separate waterfalls. While swimming is not allowed at Aling-Aling due to its sacred status, the main attraction is the canyoning, waterslides, and cliff jumping at Kembar, Kroya, and Pucuk waterfalls downstream. It’s recommended to hire a local guide for safety and navigation. The entrance fee to Aling-Aling is IDR 20,000, with additional costs for guided tours of the canyoning area. The drive from Seminyak is 85 km, taking between 2.5 to 3.5 hours.

Gitgit Waterfall

Easily accessible by road, Gitgit Waterfall is a popular destination in Bali. Standing at around 35m high and surrounded by lush jungle, it is home to a local troop of monkeys.

There is a car park with public toilets available for a small fee. The walk to the foot of the falls is about 500m. Local guides are available for around IDR100k per person, but it’s not mandatory, and you can explore on your own.

It’s 75km from Seminyak, taking 2.5 – 3 hours depending on traffic. For minimal traffic, it’s best to leave around 6 – 7 am.

Sekumpul Waterfall

Sekumpul Waterfall, one of Bali’s natural wonders, is not easy to reach but worth the effort. Located 66 km north of Ubud and 76 km from Seminyak, it takes nearly a day for a round trip. Local guides at the car park can be helpful for this hike. The walk to the falls takes about 45 minutes, and the trail is well marked.

It’s busiest from midday to 2 pm, so visiting early is advised. The waterfall flows year-round, with intense flows during the wet season from December to March. Wear good walking shoes as the track is steep and can be slippery. Despite the challenge, Sekumpul Waterfall is one of the top destinations in Bali. Nearby, Aling-Aling and Gitgit waterfalls are also worth visiting.

Nungnung Waterfall

Nungnung Waterfall is situated 900 meters above sea level in a remote village. After parking, you’ll descend 509 steps to reach the 50m high waterfall. The view is breathtaking and worth the effort.

The car park is 35kms from Ubud (about 90 mins in average traffic) and 47kms from Seminyak (around 2 hours).

Banyumala Twin Waterfalls

Banyumala Waterfalls, located in the north of Bali, is relatively easy to access compared to Sekumpul or Tukad Cepung. It’s near Lake Buyan and close to the swings at Hidden Hills Wanagiri.

A small warung and toilets with changing facilities are next to the car park. The trail to the falls is natural and can be slippery if it has been raining. It’s 66km from Seminyak (2.5 – 3 hours) and 57km from Ubud (around 2 hours).

Leke Leke Waterfall

Leke Leke Waterfall is a great stop on a tour to Danu Beretan and other attractions in Bedugul. It’s a pleasant 15-minute walk through the jungle. The best time for photography is between 12-1 pm.

There’s also a rope chair swing for IDR250,000, but considering other swing options, this one might be worth skipping.
